Health Course for All Knights Focused on Healthy Choices

Health Course for All Knights Focused on Healthy Choices

The high school health class builds on the information and skills that were taught in the middle school Health class and is aligned with the Washington State Health/Fitness Essential Learnings for Grades 9-10.

The primary focus of this course is to help students develop and practice skills that enable them to make healthy choices for themselves.

Below is a course syllabus, which describes the main units and the topics that will be covered.

  • These topics will be covered in a variety of ways: selected readings, class discussions, media that applies to the topic and guest speakers.
  • Cooperative learning activities, practicing critical thinking skills through class discussion and written assignments and the practicing of healthy, individualized decision making will enhance student learning in this course.
  • Students will also be required to do independent research on health-related topics.

All students at Newport are provided an opportunity to have two hours of HIV/AIDS prevention instruction delivered by peer educators enrolled in the ASPEN program.

  • ASPEN is also taught by Megan Feder and has been part of the Newport curriculum for 31 years.
  • Each grade level is given a different HIV/AIDS lesson that is developmentally appropriate and builds on the lesson they had the previous year.
  • Ninth graders are taken from their P.E. class for this one-hour lesson,
  • Sophomores receive the lesson as part of their Health curriculum and
  • Juniors and seniors come from their U.S. History and Government classes.

In accordance with the Washington Administrative Code and Bellevue School District Policy, parents or legal guardians have the option of excusing their child from planned instruction in FLASH and/or from any HIV/AIDS instruction. We would like to provide you with the opportunity to preview the FLASH curriculum through our OneNote notebook: Parent Access to Family Life and Sexual Health Curriculum.

If you have questions about the Health curriculum or the ASPEN program please contact Megan Feder 425-456-7466 or federm@bsd405.org. .
