Registration and Course Selection Process
Welcome to Newport! During these chilly winter days it is difficult to believe that it is time to start planning for next year! We get the process started early in March so that we have time to provide a wide range of quality information to parents and students so that next year’s courses can be selected with confidence.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Your Middle School Counselor is still your primary contact. High School Counselors will be presenting information on Newport courses and activities to 8th grade parents and students. There will be time available to ask questions and additional resources will be available on our website. High School Counselors are not available to meet with 8th grade families.
- Students will be held accountable to take requested courses (both first choices AND Alternate choices). Changes will only be made under specific circumstances.
Here are the steps you can follow to make decisions and get your questions answered. 😊
- Counselor Information sessions – Counselors will be presenting information to all current 8th grade students on February 29th and March 4th at their middle schools.
- View the Registration Presentation (see link below).
- Parent Information Night – March 7 at 6:30pm. NHS Main Gym.
- View teacher Flipgrid Videos (will be posted after March 7th) for detailed information about elective classes.
- Talk with your current core teachers – For recommendations on the best next class for you.
- Students Select courses in StudentVUE AND on the paper 9th Grade Course Selection form.
- View this Instruction Video for StudentVUE or use the step-by-step instructions below
- Students Complete Course Selection Form by the due date on the cover sheet
- Finish BOTH of these before turning your paper course selection form to your LA Teacher. Counselors can make changes if needed
- Registration forms (paper) are due to middle school Language Arts Teachers as follows:
- March 12 – Tillicum
- March 11 – Tyee
- Students coming from other middle schools in the district, please contact your middle school counselor
Important Note: Since counselors are meeting with students at the middle school, they will not have time to meet with students and families prior to the individual meetings.

Step-by-step Instructions for Course Selection in StudentVUE
- Navigate to StudentVUE (and select a student if needed). Click on the Course Request button.
- Review the information at the top of the screen. Note the Graduation Status Summary at the bottom of the screen for reference. This will not display for middle school students. Requirements that have not been met will be highlighted in yellow.
- The Selected Course Requests section will display currently requested courses for the student. These may include student selected course requests as well as requests pre-assigned by the school. Click the Click here to enter or change course requests button to select or change course requests.
- Review the instructions at the top of the screen.
- All selected course requests will appear on this screen. All pre-assigned courses cannot be removed. All other courses can be added and removed from this area.
- To add a new class, search on Department, Course ID or Course Title, then click Search Courses. A partial Course ID or Course Title may be entered to increase search results.
- Click the Add Request button to select primary course requests. Click the Alternate button to select at least 2 credits of alternate courses. Alternate course selections will be prioritized in the order selected. To change alternate course order, remove all of the alternate selections that need to be adjusted and then re-add the courses in the correct order.
- Requests auto-save after selection. The Selected Course Requests list will update to include course requests selected.
- The Comment column shows courses that have a current enrollment as well as results from courses that have already been taken.
- The Selected Course Requests grid will update to include requested courses. Back on the Course Request Summary page, the Graduation Status Summary will update to include requested courses.
- Your course selections should add up to a total of 7 periods (typically that equals 7 credits).
- Logout of StudentVUE.
