About Community Service

Students must earn forty (40) hours of Community Service as one of their graduation requirements. Students may begin to earn these hours once they complete their eight (8th) grade year. The hours may be earned all at one time, or in any manner that meets the student’s schedule, during their high school years, but must be completed prior to the student’s participation in a commencement ceremony and the granting of a diploma.

Community Service is any service that is done for non-profit agencies and organizations and/or religious organizations. School service is also included. For activities that occur over more than one day, a maximum of 10 hours/day is allowed for the 40 hours of community service required for graduation. All students will record their community service hours in x2VOL.

Logging Hours & Receiving Approval of Hours Worked

to go to your BSD Student Portal
Select Clever and log in with your BSD district account
Select x2VOL
Complete x2VOL registration if this is your first time to access x2VOL
Set your password if you’d like to use the mobile app and make sure to select a class group (your graduation year).
Log your hours by clicking “Add Hours” and then Create New”.
The form will require the name, phone number and email address for a supervisor who can verify your hours. x2VOL will send an email to that supervisor to verify the student’s services. The supervisor can be any adult employed by or volunteering for the organization who worked with you and can reasonably verify your hours. Make sure to tell your supervisor to be on the lookout for an email from x2VOL.

Tips:

If you volunteer at the same organization on a regular basis, please group these hours together so that your supervisor does not have to verify so many requests. When you’re in x2VOL, under the Document Description section, you can make a note of how many hours you volunteered for each of the days to show how you came up with the total hours submitted.
If your supervisor does not prefer to approve hours via email, they can provide a written document on the organization’s letterhead. The letter will need to include the date when your community service was done along with the number of hours worked. You will need to upload the letter into x2VOL for review and approval.
If you moved into the Bellevue School District and have earned community service hours from somewhere else, have your prior school provide a printout of those hours that they have approved for you. You will need to upload this document into x2VOL for review and approval. You may list Ms. Huynh as the supervisor to verify these Community Service hours.

If you have any questions, come to the Counseling Center before or after school and ask for Ms. Huynh.

Summer Programs and Other Enrichment Opportunities*

Bellevue Chamber’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy – Learn about entrepreneurship. Open to 9th – 12th grade students.
Bellevue College Occupational & Life Skills (OLS) Summer Camp – Must have an IEP, 504 plan, or documented disability. Two-week camps introduce workplace readiness skills and career options to young adults. Registration opens April 1.
Engineering & STEM – UW: Inspiring and preparing K-12 students to pursue post-secondary education in STEM fields. Summer engineering programs in Seattle, exploration events and more.
Evergreen Boys State – Hands-on civics program. Open to high school junior boys. Scholarships available.
Evergreen Girls State – Experiential learning civics program. Open to current high school junior girls. Scholarships available.
Fred Hutch Cancer Center HS Explorers Program – The Pathways Research Explorers Program, funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, supports rising 10th and 11th grade students (especially those from backgrounds systemically excluded from careers in biomedical science) in a two-week introductory summer program at Fred Hutch. Students must have completed a high school biology course to participate.
High School Navigator – Explore 8000+ summer programs and internships. Use filters to find the program that suits your needs.
Microsoft Discovery Program – Summer internship for high school seniors. Check site in February for updated information.
Museum of Flight – Free programs for teens: Aeronautical Science Pathways, Private Pilot Ground School, Washington Aerospace Scholars, Aeronautical Explorations, etc.
Rustic Pathways Climate Leadership Fellowship – A leadership development program for students (age 14-18) interested in climate change and environmental sustainability, and is provided by a collaboration between the Stanford University Deliberative Democracy Lab, the Rustic Pathways Foundation and Rustic Pathways.
Simons Summer Research Program – Two student nominations per year are allowed. See your counselor before December 15.
Step-Up Short-Term Research Experience Program to Unlock Potential – High school juniors and seniors from groups historically excluded from science. Paid, full-time, 8-week science internship.

UW Young Executives of Color (YEOC) - Foster School of Business program for 11th & 12th graders, first-gen &/or underrepresented minority students, interested in learning more about the world of business. Networking, mentorship, seminars, etc.
UW Youth & Teen Programs – Offers enrichment opportunities during the school year and in the summer.
WANIC Summer Courses – List of free courses is typically available around March every year. Apply early. Programs fill quickly.
Washington Business Week – For 9 -12th graders. Build leadership skills, college credit, network with business leaders, etc.
Washington State Leadership Board – Equity-focused leadership programs for youth in the State of Washington.
