Synergy StudentVUE and ParentVUE provide students and families the ability to view assignments, grades and attendance. However, please contact the attendance specialist at your school if you would like to report an absence

Attendance Policy Summary

The staff at Newport High School considers regular attendance essential to learning.  Classroom sessions are carefully planned and are a valuable experience that cannot always be duplicated.  Absence creates difficulty for both students and teachers in maintaining continuity in student progress. Washington State law requires that children attend school. We are required, by law, to track absences and identify them as excused or unexcused.

EXCUSED ABSENCES include illness, medical or dental appointments, religious observances and family emergencies. Please report your child’s absence or late arrival prior to the start of the school day.

FAMILY VACATIONS should be planned for non-school days. If there is a special reason for an absence on a school day (e.g. family trip), please print or pick up and complete a Request for Excused Absence form from the main office at least one week prior to the absence and return to the office. Your student's teacher will review your situation and determine whether the absence will adversely affect learning. Based on this information, the principal or assistant principal will determine whether the absence will be excused or unexcused. Prearranged absences due to vacation for more than five days in a school year will not be approved. Failure to follow procedure will result in an unexcused absence. Students may be approved for five prearranged absences per school year.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: State law requires that we follow specific steps for unexcused student absences, including parent conferencing. Students who have ten unexcused absences fall under the BECCA law and must be referred to the courts.

MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS: When your student returns from an excused absence, the teacher will provide make-up assignments, as appropriate. Make-up assignments are not provided in advance.

Any other missed days moving forward for non-school reasons or those outside the valid excuse policy will be unexcused absences.

Since absences affect a student’s academic performance, parents will be notified by phone each day that a student is marked absent unexcused.

Pre-Arranged Absences

Students who know they will be absent prior to an absence must pick up a pre-arranged absence form from the attendance office. Students need to obtain signatures from each of their teachers and their parent/guardian before returning the form to the Attendance Office. The purpose of teacher signatures is for the teacher to communicate the impact of the absence.

This form must be completed and returned to the Attendance Office four school days prior to the student‘s absence. Students should note that these pre-arranged absences will count towards their attendance allotment. Up to five days of pre-arranged absences will be excused per student per school year.

An absence may not be approved if it causes a serious adverse effect on the student’s educational process. Unexcused absence will count towards the five days that an administrator can excuses.

If you experience any issues logging in to StudentVUE or ParentVue, please contact Parent Help at (425) 456-4222.
